January 2021

Let the fun times roll.

We need community more than ever. Let's bring back good old fashioned fun.

Edition 107 - FRIDAY, March 20th

Ok, I'm going to be completely honest here. I'm struggling to keep the positivity alive. Fun Times Friday is supposed to be about just that - Fun - but where does fun get off in times like these? Or, possibly it is the thing that we need the most? It could be, must be. That plus movement is a recipe for success and I have to say there has been a lot of positivity flowing through the ol internet these days, so let's see how this goes. Equal parts survival guide and quest for the bitter funny truth that begs to ask the question - how are you holding up?

In an effort to keep this concise I'm going with a few good ones this time around. One good story to check out, two helpful things to think/do in this time of strangeness and two new products to shop. Shop? Is that right? Well, yes it is. We find ourselves on the same precipice that that majority of small businesses these days, so if you see something you like... you know what to do. Plus, we closed our EU webstore and will be re-releasing a few styles over the coming weeks, archival! Go nuts!

This Land: A New Voice for America's Public Lands

I said that I was only doing one story and this one is important. It's important because I love Faith Briggs and the stories that she chooses to tell and the way that she tells them. This film took her the last two years to pull off and it looks to be worth every moment. She brings finesse and vitality to literally everything that she does (small business owner getting verklempt over awesome employees here). So, give it a watch and we'll circle back around shortly for a little Q & A with Faith. Send along any questions that you need answers to.

Also, that Triple Double sock, we have a few from the EU in stock now. There are a few of our socks that pop up in the film and it's because Faith was working here at the time, so cool to see! Thanks for including us!
----

Stay Home, Save Lives

Michael Tabtabai posted this beauty (by @Koua07) on his instagram with a pretty simple call out to all the designers out there to create their own versions. Almost instantaneously I started to see some cool ones pop up from Max and Megan at Central Office Design Co and a few others. Go go go. This is wonderful and important. Contribute, draw something, make it from your third can of alphabet soup, I don't care how you do it, just do it. I'll do one tomorrow and post it up and if you feel like joining in give us a tag and we'll pass it along.
----

Project Backboard: Basketball Court Coloring Book

This one isn't that serious, but I imagine that there are a whole host of people out there looking for things to do this week (and next, and the one after) so why not doing some good old fashioned coloring? Stay within the lines, or not. What's important is that you have some fun, anxiety-reducing fun.
----

The Loop SFFT Socks

We partnered with The Loop Running Supply Co. in Austin, Texas to make these beauties. You might be wondering what the "SFFT" stands for and this is where I tell you the answer - Stronger Faster Further Together. Couldn't get much more relevant than that in these times. If you want to support the homies in TX you can go buy them directly from them as well, they're cool. Plus, they have these SUPER DOPE Will Bryant shirts going on.

There's also a Navy version with our Tigre Time Tiger showing off his smiling face on them.
----

Edition 106 - FRIDAY, February 28th

Here we go again. After our break last week (it's called "load management" people, look it up) we're back to the regularly scheduled interactions with the internet that you're used to. I'm sure you're all up on current events in politics, art, sport and anything else important so I will just present a bunch of things that caught my eye this week. Yours in movement - JD.

Making The Coolest Team in Pro Cycling

"Being the strongest guy is easy, but, like, learning how to ride with tactics and knowing how to use your teammates is something we can help him with." This interview with Justin Williams is straight up great. His team (L39ion LA) is the coolest team in cycling and the emphasis that they place on "cool" brings such a great and needed element to the cycling world. Watch it for the moment where he talks about getting into bike riding with his father.
----

NASA White Basketball - Anicorn

This is just hot. Talk about taking space jam to another level. I'm not sure how you would keep it clean (magic eraser?) but it looks like it would be a lot of fun. I'd hoop with it is what I'm saying.
----

Boycycle

Boycycle is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Maybe? The skin of the Centaur (biketaur?) is super weird as is pretty much everything else in the film. But at the same time, it's impossible to look away. Though he does look like he's enjoying leaning in to a few of those turns and that seems nice. UPDATE: I take that back, I just watched filmmaker Salvatore Ganacci's film Horse and it's weirder. Like, in a good way.
----

@mabramemes

Oh my dear, this is amazing and so incredibly true. But, then again what ARE those pro's supposed to do? They can't all have jobs at USA Cycling you know. Let the hippies rip a bowl is all we're saying over here.
----

Burton AK457 from Field Mag

Of course Hiroshi Fujiwara could and would and did make a dope looking Burton line that is only available in Japan. Think North Face Purple label. Maybe that's just another marketing strategy "only available in Japan." Hey wait a minute, maybe we're on to something there? Also, shoutout to Field Mag for shouting out Errolson and snowboarding.
----

Westbrook, Harden GQ Cover

Ok, well there you go. So fresh and so clean. The Dynamic Duo of James Harden and Russel Westbrook take on Outkast in the cover of the new GQ. But, my question is... wasn't there a Bun B cover that they could have done instead and let Trae Young and John Collins do this one?
----

100 Year Old Church Converted into Skate Park

Talk about taking "church" to a new level. We talk about "dirt church" aka riding mountain bikes on Sunday or things like that, but this gang really put their money where their mouth is. With the help of artist @okudart they made this place look sooooo dooope!
----

To Catch Marathon Cheaters

This Wired article starts out humorous and gets dark pretty quickly. Consider yourself warned. When one blogger who investigates Marthon Cheaters is brought to a prominent runner in LA...well, I'm just saying you should go check this one out.
----

Behind the Wheel, Behind the Eight Ball

It should be noted that it's not just professional basketball and cycling that struggle with their support of female athletes. The New York Times reports on the life and times of Jackie Heinricher, professional racer and biotech exec. Racing has come a long way since women debuted in the sport in 1966...or has it?
----

Why Can't We Sue Burning Man?

I know a few people that regularly attend this. Not something I can say I've ever had the urge for, even though I still do enjoy the company of those people. But, what the holy crap is going on here with this one. Suing the BLM for... well, for anything is just plain stupid. So, there you have it, another reason not to go and trash Reno, Nevada. You're welcome. (Thanks for pointing this one out Kyle.)
----

Edition 105 - FRIDAY/SUNDAY, Feb 14th - 16th

Whoo-ee. Ebikes and high flying dunks this week. We got all wrapped up in All-Star weekend to make this happen any other time than right now! And oh what fun it has been...a three point shoot out that came down to the WIRE and a controversial dunk competition, what more can you ask for. Plus, we've got e-bikes coming out of our ears, it's a thing. Embrace it, especially because now that they look cool now, you can say you were always into them. Continually yours in movement - JD.

JD White Photo - Tie & Dye

How dope is this? We gave some our tie & dye socks to local photographer JD White to play around with and things got trippy, you know? JD has been doing all sorts of fun photo 'tings so make sure to check out what he has going on. There is bright bubble gum pop to everything he touches - sort of like these donuts for PDW - or his new take on the family photo, it's all so so good.
----

Specialized Turbo Levo SL

Up first in the e-mountain bike game... Specialized, big surprise. They've lightened everything up. Ok, if there's one thing that brands can do for e-bikes to start to continue to gain acceptance from cyclists everywhere (because let's face it, they're not coming, they're here) it's make them a) lighter and b) look cool. The new Turbo Levo checks both those boxes with a cheesy movie trailer voice to boot and even a French "innovate or dye" from Loic Bruni.
----

The Lost Sierras and the New Heckler

Santa Cruz has the right idea as well. Pairing their bike with a bulletproof back story is also a a damn fine way to go. These bikes help you get out there even further than you imagined. You still have to pedal them, ya goof. The other thing that this video does it make me want to go ride in Downyville. Damn that looks fun. Let's go!
----

Inside the Santa Cruz Syndicate with Kathy Sessler

Former Portlander Brian Gerow lives and writes for Singletracks over in Italy. Digging through their archives I came across his profile of Kathy Sessler. Sadly, she wasn't at Trans-Cascadia when I went last year, but all the Syndicate riders did was talk about her, so it's cool to see this one. She's seen it all.
----

All-Star Weekend Highlights

And this is where we move to the hoops portion of the evening...Buddy Hield won the 3 Point Shootout, beating out Devin Booker! Love watching this scrappy Sacramento team as they build themselves into something long lasting and more importantly FUN with players like Hield and De'Aaron Fox. Bam Adabayo (Skills Champ) and Derrick Jones Jr. (Dunk Champ!) People will say that it was spoiled, but I heartily agree with the Jones decision after seeing Aaron Gordon clip Tacko Fall's head on his final dunk! High flying antics for sure! Plus, this guy was using people in tie dye hoodies, not Chance the Rapper, he just went out there and jumped out of the building.
----

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Puts the Ritz on Oklahoma City

SGA is emerging as one of the most creative players in the NBA right now. Bank shots, bank shots, they are high percentage shots. Plus, he makes everything look so effortless. It's cool to see him on the rise, what wasn't cool was that he got knocked out of the first round of the skills competition which was then won by Bam Adabayo. These are crazy times that we live in, amazing!
----

Foamposites The Ugly Shoe Everyone Loves

"The taste I never acquired." Lol. Thanks Prince for sending this one through. Though I can't claim to be a fan of these plastic space shoes, their fans to exist and this little trip down memory lane is pretty nice (Pippen! Penny!) I feel like they would just be too hot! With all that being said, I do remember when the Galaxy ones came out, those were just hot! Who's going to wear them this weekend at the All-Star Game?
----

The Kicks You Wear - Substack

What's a substack (ok, actually I know). But, I've been subscribed to this one (free) for the last couple of months and it's fantastic. It makes me want to start one of my own. Waiiit a second. In any case this one is great because of the genuine interest in all kinds of kicks. There's no real industry insider info on here, just great lovable enthusiasm.

Do people have other substacks that they read and subscribe to?

----

Edition 104 - FRIDAY/SATURDAY, Feb 7th, 8th

Oscars, flat track moto racing at the Veterans Colosseum, the Harlem Globetrotters and another exciting Blazers game as we creep out of the bottom. The weekend is off to a great start. What are you up to? Here's a few things from this week that caught my eye, grabbed my attention and helped us continue to blast off. Yours in movement - JD.

There's Magic in Movement

We had a dry spell for a moment there last week so it was nice to get out and spin around for a bit. You know the drill, try to coordinate your outfit as quickly as possible so that you can still get out the door effectively before the sun is totally gone. Go go go! It also gave me a moment to lock up on the Tie & Dye Blue Grey Socks. Pretty happy with how it all turned out.
----

Nike Space Hippie Recycled Shoes

How cool are these shoes? They’re so cool even LeBron James wore them the other night. That’s the answer. I want all three, and it’s cool to see a little bit of the process behind them. Plus, again, how cool do these shoes look? In-situ utilization sounds about right. Now, the real question will be if they made enough for the masses or just the cool kids with the bots? Because we know you've got enough scrap lying around for a big run.
----

The Most Searched

We had too many videos last week to jam them all in here. So, this one get's to go up this week. Our friend Brandon Viney made this video here in Portland, Oregon. It's amazing and important and offered as a great reminder that while some of the people featured here have been suggested to be silent (LeBron James famous "shut up and dribble" incident) they deserve the attention that they bring to their individual accomplishments.
----

Asics x Reigning Champ Vancouver Edition

Looking for a dark and dreamlike video to watch today? This is kind of what it looks like outside anyway. One thing that I thought when looking through this collection... how cool is it that running takes so much less gear than riding? Sure, we're in it for the gear, I get that much, but what about those simpler times when you threw on pants and a long sleeve and went for a run? Ok, neckwarmer too.
----

Rx Skulls Lighthouse Sticker Pack

I've got a thing for stickers, that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I mean, didn't Radio Fred call them the currency of the industry? The currency of CULTURE. The Lighthouse Pack from RX Skulls is killing it right now. Even John Watson from the Radavist gave it a seal of approval of sorts "even better than the movie." Lol. These are fucking great!
----

Dustin Goes to Italy

I want a new bike. Something gravelly and warm. With fat tires, but options. Something gravelly and awesome and I'm not going to lie, the idea of flying Dustin out to Italy to make this bike is super cool. I've never before seen the process of dipping the frames for the water decals. Such beautiful precision. Plus, how awesome is this bike going to look built up?
----

Canyon/SRAM - The Wild Ones

"I love it, I think it's cool." That's what Julie said about this video. "It's a different kind of thing. You never get to see this side of it, but it exists, it's real." I'm just a little mad that they stole our wolf howl babe. This is something that I used to make Julie do on the start line of the World Cup races (when I could get a pit pass and they would let me out there). But, that's cool, these ladies are amazing and this is far and away the best thing I've seen Rapha put out lately. Howwwwwl.
----

Omata - Living Omata Values

Julie and I stopped by Julian's Omata space in Santa Monica while we were down there last month and got to see his studio/work space/podcast recording studio. It is the perfect example of something grown out of what you have around you. This video is a great extension of that philosophy. Is it a philosophy? Not sure, but it feels like one. Plus, the process video of him fixing the unit is so great, I could watch this all day.
----

Good Sport - From Barbershop to Wrestling Ring

Ok, let's wrap this one with Juice Lee! The wild weird world of professional wrestling comes to life on the digital pages of Good Sport. Do they have a new magazine in the works? Fingers crossed, but for now we can get juicy with their updated articles. Who wants to go get haircuts and watch Juice Lee with me?
----

Edition 103 - FRIDAY, January 31st - 2020

What a week already. Let's just say it got off to a rocky start. But, it's Friday and hopefully the magic that you have planned for the weekend will help you get through any rough spots. There's magic in riding. There's magic in running and hooping and hiking. There's magic in moving. Just don't forget it.

Tie & Dye Socks

They're here, they're here, they're finally here. Ok, we said that last week, but, we got some film photos back that show them in their natural state - aka - on feet. It's a novel idea, socks for feet. You should try it. Plus, how cool are the photos from this camera? Thanks Jordan! They are our natural wool Fun Camp socks that we dyed ourselves and we are pretty stoked at how they turned out.
Check out all the colors here!

----

Kobe & Gigi

However you feel about Kobe on or off the court, it's impossible to deny that he had an effect on everyone around him. However complicated his legend might be, let's focus on the bond that he had with his daughter for a minute. Marc Stein does a more than accurate job of giving them both an obit they deserve. And with a little Shammgod thrown in for good measure.
----

RIP Jason Polan

We lost a few good ones this week folks. Some more personal than others, it's been great to see the tributes to artist Jason Polan going up on everyone's feed. The above photo was posted by photographer Cole Wilson. How cool is it that dude wanted to draw everyone in NYC??
----

Lifecasting - Victory Journal

“Making public work is the best relationship with the people that you’re working with, because you’re doing something which is going to be shared by a larger community,”

Another banger from Victory Journal this week. Rigoberto Torres and John Ahearn cast people and then create life-like depictions of them in various states of sport. The works, often times are public and nearly all of their pieces depict this sensibility.
----

adidas | Change is a Team Sport

--- and we'd be honored to be on a team with you. Even Tracy McGrady made the cut on this one with Liz Cambage and Jenn Soto! All the superstars unite in Jonah Hill's new ad for adidas. I suddenly feel the urge to go back to school, and there! Sign me up. Think someone can teach an old guy like me to skate? Kidding, I'm already broken thinking about it.
----

All City Presents - The Super Professional

"What's in the box??" Kyle's feature debut with All City Cycles looks great. He plays the part well. What a stoner. But in all honesty it doesn't get much better than this, because who wants to watch boring videos at work when they're supposed to be doing something else? No one. That's who.
----

Blackburn Design - Wild Virtue

"You're doing it, don't let the tent get the best of you." Blackburn Design has a great little bikepacking trip from our friends here in Oregon. Dylan and Dan and Heather and Kurt put on what looks to be a fun tour for some first timers over the summer and it's plain to see that we've got some future bike packers in our midst.
----

Dog of the Week - Atlas & Archie

Ok, I've got one more for you and it's just pure pleasure at this point. And because I'm stoked about this new little camera that my friend Jordan gave me. And just freaking look at these two derps.
----

Edition 102 - FRIDAY, January 24th - 2020

Tie Dye Everything Around Me... I couldn't stop tie dying socks over the holidays. It was an obsession, it got in my very soul. We found that we had a few of the Fun Camp wool socks that were just ready and waiting to be turned into these beauties. Very stoked to bring these into the world.

But, what else? Surely that wasn't the only thing happening this week. (It wasn't) It also wasn't the only tie dye thing happening. Maybe you could even say that T&D is having a moment. Can we call it "T&D"?

Tie & Dye Socks

We played around with a few color combinations here and the blues look good, purple is dope and the green... well, olive green is thing too. The sizing might be limited (sorry if you're an XL) but you know, when you're playing around in the basement, er color lab with dyes and a few natural wool socks, something is bound to happen, and it did! We're on trend in a big way.
Check out all the colors here!

----

Atlas Tye Dye Snowshoes

Mister Mort likes tie dye too. If you don't know Mr. Mort check out this little interview first. But, of course he likes tie dye snowshoes because he hates the Grateful Dead and probably isn't into snow sports, but these do look cool.
----

Tie-Dye Butter Cookies

Mmm. Cookies. I am legit thinking of making these this weekend (hopefully Julie isn't reading this in case I back out at the last minute) because they do look cool and it would have been a great way to launch these socks. But, then again how am I supposed to get you cookies through the internet? Damn, those do look good.
----

Victory Journal - Outside In

You know we love us some Liz Cambage over here at the Athletic Community. She left the sport of basketball when she was playing at its highest level, AND THEN CAME BACK! It's crazy to think that people have a hard time celebrating people who decide to leave to take care of themselves. We've seen this a few times this year (most recently with Luke Kuechly) with players who are choosing personal health over everything else. In any case, Liz came back and let the WNBA in scoring and finished second in rebounding, it's safe to say that she's killing it.
----

Slick Watts

Speaking of icons of basketball I first saw this image of Slick Watts rocking his headband in an instagram photo and went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out more about him. Turns out, not only is he a style icon, but he was a pretty good hooper as well. Plus, how about these Sonics jerseys?? The article is a little rambling, but it's cool to see it on his basketball camp site.
----

Amazing Duo's

I love this because it looks so good. So clean and agnostic of all the brands that are inevitably represented. And this duo is also so good, so that helps everything as well. Plus, there's a little known fact about Sean from Team Dream Bicycling Team and it's that he's a Clippers fan, so there you go.
----

Radiohead Public Library

This is cool. Especially because people have been saying all week that they "Don't get it." Which is weird, because it seems pretty straightforward to me. I haven't delved into much Radiohead these days, but this video for "Daydreaming" is pretty trippy. So many doorways. Plus, the idea of a "public library" for something like a prolific band that's gone through many iterations during the birth and creation of the internet is pretty cool. Also, Pitchforks 7 Things That Excite Us... made me laugh.
----

Banning Kiphoge's shoes is the silliest idea in running right now

Ok, here's a way to make this the most popular shoe ever. Ban it! Burn it! Get it out of here! The quotes from other runners is what make's this hilarious. It's apparent that they only want it banned because it isn't their sponsor.
----

Gravel Gearing - Horses for Courses

Honestly I just love this graphic. This is best way I've seen of simplifying the whole "But what gear should I ride" scenario. I mean, you could put up a Sheldon Brown-esque gear calculator up there, but without an eagle taped to your helmet you're not going to get anywhere in the first place. Plus, it's cool how many cool ass bikes there are in there? So simple, so dope. Still can't figure out what bike that the rider at the top of the page is on, but it looks so cool. PS - who wrote this article because that headline is a straight-up banger!
----

Cycling Industry Pledge

Read this. Know this. Sign this.

"We believe the bike industry will reach its full potential when it represents everyone who rides a bike." Doesn't get much better, or truer than that.
----

Edition 101 - FRIDAY, January 17th - 2020

We're really into it now. This new year, as it were. There has been some good, some bad. Mostly bad, but that shouldn't thwart us, because it is still in our power to ensure that this year ends up in the mostly good column. I've been trying to pull together some of my favorite projects from the year, things to muse on and mull over and celebrate, I don't know how everyone does it so effectively. Is it still ok to do in February? Lol.

Ireland's Untamed Beauty Makes It a Beast to Ride.

The new issue of Bicycling Magazine is all about "where to ride this year" and it has some great adventures outlined in it. Matt Roy and Bradford Smith take a stab at answering this question, but I have to tell you folks, don't always just do what other tell you to. These two are extra fierce, so just take that into consideration. They may get all... "drunk on rolling emerald hills" but they still crush and no bones about it, they'll do it in any weather. Matt Roy has been my first time in a lot of cases (easy, easy) and one of them is "snapping a derailleur cable because it was well below freezing." But, in all seriousness go check out this article and accompanying photography from Little Outdoor Giants.
----

Australia is Burning.

There are a couple ways to help out with the Australia Bush fires. The NY Times has a great list going of places for your donation dollars. If you spend any time at all on instagram you'll also see more than a few individuals that are raising funds by making cool stuff. I bought a handful of stickers from the above crew - @Dreyfus.Art - which has some dope stuff going on. There's also a Gang Run going down with local sticker star Rx Skulls if that's more your thing. Note that it closes tonight (Jan17th).
----

Specialized Down Under Collection.

Also, this is pretty cool. Specialized is donating $100,000.00 from their "budgie" collection to support wildlife relief efforts. Actually, it seems like they're just donating the amount regardless, which is even cooler. Real Question: Is this why the tight swim pants are called "budgie smugglers"? Have people put these small birds down their pants? Anyway, big fan of the blue faded helmet and entire collection.
----

Brian Vernor at USA Cyclocross National Championships

He's back at it again with some black and white portraits and a short film about EF Rider and PNW racer Logan Owen. The film is a bit behind the scenes look at one of the greatest racers to have come out of this region of the country. Come back to Cyclocross Logan! It is also great to see so many fantastic faces out there supporting the scene and making it happen...hi Terry!
----

Start Where You Are: Fundraising Through Fun Racing...

You know we love it when Kyle von Hoetzendorff has something to say, especially when it's over on the Radavist (check out that sweet new logo lockup by the way!) This time he tackles the Leave It On The Road crew and their efforts to raise money through riding and racing cyclocross bikes. Plus, he starts it off with a quote from a quote from Arthur Ashe, so it's got that going for it too.
----

1917

Ok, now that you've all seen Uncut Gems, let's talk about 1917 for a minute. Sam Mendes WWI drama that has been getting all the buzz these days. The fact that it won a Best Picture Golden Globe before the film had even seen its release day should be a testament to something. It does an amazing job of building and delivering tension throughout its two hour sprint towards the finish line with relatively unknown actors. Plus, with Roger Deakins at the helm what could go wrong?
----

Bloody Clever Dracula Ad

Pun intended. How cool is this billboard ad? The show itself does a good job a re-vamping (intended) everyones favorite blood sucker, but who the heck came up with this billboard, that's what I want to know? BBC it turns out. Note the case at the street level with the stake in it.
----

Another From Nationals

Now would you look at that face right there. An Athletic Kit with a BKW sticker to boot. Doesn't get much better than that. Shout out to Aaron for rocking the kit at Nationals this year.
----

Edition 100 - FRIDAY, January 3rd - 2020

Write more. Read more. Ride more. Sleep more. Dunking by 40. Cooking more.  More more more. What are we supposed to say here? Oh wait, I've got it. New Year, new you. Well, that's one way to look at it, but I'm just me, I'm all I've got so we're just going to dive right in to the whole thing.  It's exciting that we've gotten to episode/issue number 100 as well. Feels like a real milestone. I started to look back into the archive from the past year or so to see what people were clicking on, and then I was like "yeah, let's just go with the new cool." So, here you have it...

Tie Dyed Socks!

We're working on some fun stuff for the new year. These socks were a hit a couple weeks back at our holiday pop up and we're stoked to be bringing them to you shortly. You'll have to find the beat up Rapha kicks on your own.
----

2020 - The Year of the Long Sleeve

The other morning we rode with Kyle Kelley of Golden Saddle Cycles and he was rocking this Pastel Peach jammer. Good! Check out what they have going on over at Our Legends, but then when you're ready to up your game go with the Ringtail Parachute Pal LS. We could do this all day. Thanks for the ride Kyle!
----

Fire on the Mountain (Surf/Snow Film)

Part Surf, part snowboard, all Walton, this film looks and sounds fantastic. However, we're thinking it's mostly because Bill Walton is on it waxing poetic in the only way he can. Check out the interview with Director Chris Benchetler on how he aimed to capture the spirit of the Grateful Dead.
----

Portland Trail Blazers Long Sleeve

See? Told you. Pretty sure that the only reason that these long sleeves are on sale is because of how our 'Zers are playing these days. From the mind of Nathan McKee, I got one and I think you should too. Plus, the Vision Street Wear vibes never hurt anyone did they?
----

Serge Ibaka Still Can't Believe He's a Champion Now

Winning the NBA Championship has to be a pretty great feeling. Taking the trophy and returning with it to the Republic of Congo to the restaurant where you begged for table scraps has to be even better. Alex Wong comes through with the Christmas Day drop! Also, check out Serge's show How Hungry Are You? with Tiffany Haddish.
----

The Ringer Podcast with Kevin Garnett & Adam Sandler

Ok, we're almost through my own personal vendetta that goes towards getting everyone to see Uncut Gems. Plus, I've now seen it! It's amazing and very, very stressful. This podcast is great because it's two of the stars of the show talking about pickup basketball and the Celtics, todays youngsters and everything that you could hope to hear about from a stressful hoops movie. Also, I want to play hoops with Adam Sandler. Can we add that to list of goals for this year?
----

Marc Stein on NBA Commissioner David Stern

Let's try, just for a minute to not look at this photo from the perspective of Portland Trailblazers fans. Because the man that is not in this photo, the number three pick that year, was Michael Jordan. Woulda coulda shoulda. Whatever you feel about the NBA right now, you are that way because of David Stern's tireless work to getting the league to where it is today. Great piece!
----

Prickly Pals Long Sleeve

Look at the little rat-tail on this cactus. A sentence that I never thought I'd ever type, and yet, here it is. Also, realize that almost all of these shirts are in my possession, that's how cool I believe that they are. Prickly Pals is the sister shop to the Team Dream Bicycling Team Cub House out in Pasadena and also this shirt is dope.

Favorite Socks of the Year - Camo Socks Danube Blue

I've had a few favorites this year, but I think that these camo socks take the cake. I initially thought that the original color - Cilantro - was the one for me. And it was.. but this new blue has been blowing my mind. Plus, it works well with the understated kit choices... just a hint of Pop! Nice work Julie!

Edition 099 - FRIDAY, December 13th / MONDAY, 16th -  2019

What's better than a Fun Times Friday? A Monday as well. Or both, combined into one. We can fully say that we're into the holidays at this point, that much we know, so just dig your heels in, grit your teeth and we'll make it through. There's a lot going on out there in the world and even here in Portland, so buckle up and let's party.

Clara Honsinger wins Cyclocross National Championship!

Congratulations! So cool to see this PNW staple unseat the 15 year champion this past weekend. Congrats to Sellwood, Kona, and most of all to Clara for what looks to have been an amazing and historic ride. Check out this post race quote:

"It's not a changing of the guard. It's a progression of cyclo-cross. We are all still out here racing together. It's just a little switch-up of what it's been the last years,"
----

Red Letter Holiday Pop-Up!

We will be participating in this Holiday Pop-Up at the Ace Hotel on Thursday. Swing by to check out some special socks that we've been working on. We found a few pairs of the natural wool socks that we made for Fun Camp this year and had a little...uh...fun with them. There will also be a few other unique holiday gift ideas / sellers on hand so that you can lock in those last minute gifts as well.
----

Outside is Free T-Shirts

I don't care what anyone says, our friend Ben, the original-OG-creator of Outside is Free has made some t-shirts to help raise funds to help his friend François David. All proceeds will go to PIAUMA AC as they develop social inclusion projects with the migrant community in Mexicali, Mexico.
----

The Safdie Brothers' Full Immersion Filmmaking

Ok, in our continued push to bring you the latest and greatest film centric content (lol) we bring you this amazing New Yorker article about the Safdies. It's a great read that delves deep into the filmmaking past and spins right back around with enough speed to still hype the forthcoming Uncut Gems.
----

The Rewatchables - Happy Gilmore

One of the best sports movies ever? A combination of Caddyshack and Stripes? The folks behind the Ringer sit down with the Safdie Brothers (Ok, ok, enough already) and talk about Adam Sandler's classic film - Happy Gilmore. For fans of Sandler this is not to be missed as the filmmakers talk about their time with Sandler and what his star power is really about.
----

The James Brand - Mehlville

Gang. Want to know how you can tell when you've made it to the big time? When you just know that your hand and belt and chino game has taken it to the next level? Well, for me that time has come. I won't bore you with the whole story, but that is my hand right there. Mine! It's been an incredible journey folks and I want to thank you all... Also, if you're still looking for cool gifts, this is one of them.
----

Loyalty Over Everything

Damian Lillard's first entry to the Players Tribune is a doozy. Talking about his family and his upbringing in Oakland is just one part of it. The intro itself is worth the price of admission. Trading opened yesterday in the NBA, so let's just take "Loyalty Over Everything" at face value as we roll through these tough times here in Portland.
----

Team Dream NASA Long Sleeve Jersey

TDT launched all their new winter apparel and it looks so damn good! I want I want. I want one of their NASA jersey and vest combinations. So, if you want to go ahead and order that for me I'd be happy to take one. Thank you very much. They look so good. Congrats to the crew that worked their eyeballs off to make this happen. Looking at you Carla!
----

A Note on Tie Dyed Socks

Ok, seriously, come out on Thursday to the pop-up. I've been working my ass off on putting rubber bands on white wool socks these days and I think you're going to enjoy the outcome. They might even match some of those cool ass Team Dream jerseys. You never know.

Edition 098 - FRIDAY, December 6th, 2019

A few more weeks left in the year. A new decade on the horizon, what are we going to do? Let's do something great and let's do it together. You made it through another Black Friday, you're back at your desk trying to make it through until another few days off this month. You can do it. We can do it together. Our Gift Guide this year is called Fun Times Friday. We do it for you so let's go!

Bridge City CX

In preparation for next weekend's Cyclocross National Championship in Seattle...er...Tacoma, I went out to Sellwood Cycle's addition to the race calendar. I called it a tune-up for me too, spectating can be difficult, everyone know's that. However, this race made it easy with it's proximity to Portland and just general awesomeness. Check it out on the Athletic Journal.
----

Ultradynamico Tyres

Do you, or does someone in your life only ride on 650b tires (and call them "tyres")? Well, I'm sorry that you have friends that go that slow, BUT, they can now look good too. Ultradynamico is there to help with their selection of rubber goods straight from Japan. Word on the street is that they've got something for us, their old school 700c friends in the works. Shhhhhh. Get a t-shirt in the meantime.
----

Field Notes: Winter Edition - Group Eleven

It's been a while since I posted about Field Notes. But, damn... metallic hot foil stamped? Dot graph paper on the inside? Ooh, what's not to like? If you're notebook obsession takes you down a more refined path, then I suggest checking out Mordecai Book Building site. There's more than enough drool worthy pieces in there, like this little Mayo beauty.
----

A Crowdsourced Guide to Socially Responsible Gift-Giving

Honestly, this wasn't supposed to be a gift-guide about gift-guides. But, alas, I'm not only incredibly lazy sometimes, but they don't get much better than this one right here on the Field Mag by @youdidnotsleepthere (which is funny in it's own right). Which means it's sort of sourced guide sourced guide. You're welcome.
----

Don't Listen to the Haters, Socks are a Great Gift

We made it into a gift guide! You don't even know how stoked I get when this happens. But, I'm telling you, it's a lot. But, the headline is totally true, in fact, it's something that we've worked into our very ethos here at the Athletic Community. They are one hell of a great gift, especially the PDX Airport Carpet Sock. Why not start with the legend?
----

Draw a Bicycle From Memory

Ok, take a break from shopping for a minute, I'm afraid you're going to hurt yourself. You need a little humor in your life. Well, I do anyway, so I'm going to force it on you because I feel like you need it. This one isn't new, but it is funny. The artist involved asked folks to draw a bicycle from memory and then renders their creations for all to see. Have a chuckle, you deserve it.
----

The Safdie Brothers Almost Put Joel Embiid in Uncut Gems

You've heard me talk about movies before here right? Right? Well, that's because I love them and it is movie season right now folks. The Safdie Brothers new movie comes out on Christmas called Uncut Gems - starring Adam Sandler and Kevin Garnett. Here they talk about their other choices for the film (Kobe, Embiid, Amar'e) before going off on a NY Knicks rant that is straight up delicious. Also, before you go see Gems, do a little precursor with their 2017 film Good Time.
----

Vollebak Indestructible Puffer

This puffy jacket is made from Dyneema. DYNEEMA! Why didn't we think of that? Oh wait, we don't make clothing like this, Vollebak does. If this is your first time hearing about them, go take a deep dive into what they have going on. I've played with the glow in the dark jacket and you can write on it with a bike light. I'm putting this on my list, so you can put it on yours. But, if you want to get one for me, well, that's cool too. That's how gifts work. Also, they're from the UK, so they can call them "puffers" you however, cannot.
----

Smooth Gooseneck Gift Guide

Oh you don't know Smooth Gooseneck? Well, you're about too. We got another shout out in a Gift Guide from our friend and cohort CD. Hey CD! He likes to talk hoop and bicycles and the intertwining of the two. Now, you know, so go check it out. Also, how good looking is that Chrome Jacket? The Triple Double Socks make and appearance in here and you know what? They're dope. I play in them every week, sometimes twice.
----

Electric Socks - Koi

These are my favorite socks of the season around here. I can't usually get into Orange, but I'm working on it. Plus, this photo from the racing a couple weeks back is one of my favorites. The posture, the rider in the background, even the tiny cut in the side of the Converse. It all works. So, there you go. Gift Guide Volume 1.
----

Edition 097 - FRIDAY, November 22nd, 2019

There's so much good stuff happening in Portland this weekend that we should just start right there. After a weekend of riding Mountain Bikes in the high desert let's get back into it here. After all brands are coming back from the dead. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the weather around here has been pretty magical. Wait, do we still get to call it magical if it's being caused by global warming?

Get out there this weekend.

Electric Socks Kind of Weekend

We took the Electric Socks mountain biking this past weekend. We took our friend Katie too, she looked resplendent in her Topo Designs flannel cruising through the tree. Nature, huh. Who knew?
----

KEX Portland Opening weekend

But, just what is KEX? Is it a new pirate radio station? A biscuit from Iceland? A little of both? Who knows, but it sure looks cool. Go check it out for yourself. The lineup for the weekend looks like an interesting cast of characters. My vote is for the late night performance artist / stand up show in their appropriately named Gym & Tonic Basement Bar. All I really know is that I hope its sponsored by Reyka Vodka because they make the best commercials on during Blazer games. Taak!
----

The Purple Fashion Show - 11/24

Who doesn't love a multidimensional fashion show? Especially, when that extra dimension is Purple! This should be a good one. We donated every purple sock that we've ever made to their pop-up shop. Plus, they have their eyes on the prize, as the benefits will go to the Children's Cancer Association. Get tickets.
----

Bridge City CX - 11/24

It's going to be super tough to be in two places at once, but cyclocross in the city! Erik Tonkin's Sellwood Cycles has a new race on the calendar to help folks tune up for the upcoming National Championship's in Washington. But, this one has an amusement park going for it. Let's get out there and cheer on cyclocross in our backyards so it continues to happen.
----

Your Dad's Favorite Outdoor Brands are Now Cool

Either that's just a nice way of saying "you're getting old" or it really is true. There was more than one thing on that list where I went "ooh, I would actually fuck with that jacket." So, I guess Dad is back to being cool, again. My Dad fully gave up that moniker when he fake-poked himself in the eye (complete with ketchup packet) to "hammer home" the need for safety glasses at the start of my 7th grade Tech Ed classes. So, there's that. Also, how did Land's End miss this list?
----

A Day in the Life of Sabrina Ionescu

"I just don't like to lose." Coming off leading her Oregon Ducks to a convincing win over the USA Women's National Team it looks like Ms. Ionescu confirmed every other team's fears - she's the real deal. Touted as the number 1 pick in next year's WNBA she's the one to watch. And she's got Tinker Hatfield autographed sneakers that he took off his feet to give her.
----

Nike City Jersey's, Ranked

It's that time again. Time to look over the good, the bad, and the straight up ugly jerseys that the NBA pull on as alternate uniforms. Chicago (above) stands out. Can't wait to see Coby White rocking it. There are a few other great ones in there (Denver!) and a couple that just sort of meh it out. The Mav's however? That needs to be seen to be believed. WTF?
----

Pinq Ponq

Not really sure what to make of this brand. But, I do love pinq ponq and these designs look great. Who couldn't use a radical over the shoulder pak these days? Plus, with names like Cement Taupe and Butter Yellow, we've got a winner. Because everything is better with butter.
----

Atlas made doggo of the week, again!

We're not ashamed, that's our excited pup right there. Besides, the influx of cute dogs on adventures has died down slightly. Let's get it back up there.

Edition 096 - FRIDAY, November 14th, 2019

What's popping off? It's Friday, which is one thing. The Blazers apparently signed Carmelo Anthony, which is another thing entirely. We're still trying to sort out details over here in Rose City, Bridge City, Rip City, but things have been dicey over the first dozen games of the year, so we're really just looking for anything to spice up the season. Ok, let's not get bogged down in details, let's go, there's so much more happening. Like...the Simpsons!

PDX Airport Carpet Sock makes guest appearance on the Simpsons!!

Ok, we can officially retire now. Thanks to our fans for pointing this one out! The most recent episode of the Simpsons sees Marge take a trip to Portland for a lumberjill competition and the PDX Socks make a guest appearance. Other notable shoutouts: Jill Sobule at the Crystal Ballroom, Subaru's, Nike, and a few other notables. They pop up right at 01:22 in this clip.
----

Spies Like Us

What the what? This is an exciting, yet altogether depressing article about what it takes to get the fame, recognition and most importantly, the paycheck that is deserved as a female athlete. Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi tell intense story of playing for Russian Spy due to low WNBA Wages. Side Note: here's an unsolicited fix for the Blazers — hire Liz Cambage instead of Melo.
----

Mountain of Storms

Go watch the trailer for Mountain of Storms - epic right? - well, one of the climbers that played an integral role - Dick Dorworth - is going to be in Bend, OR this weekend for a screening and talk at the newly opened Crow's Feet: A Mountain Collective. How dope is that?
----

Parasite (Film Trailer)

We're jumping all over the place here. But, that's cool, it's Friday, you can handle it. I went out and saw this film tonight. I'm not sure how to accurately write a review in the span of a few words that will do this justice. Go see it. This is cinema at its best. (I feel like I say that about every movie, but I mean it about this one.)
----

Black Panther Enamel Pin

If you know me, (kind of feels like you do, right?) you should know by now that something like this covers off three of my favorite things - marvel comics - enamel pins - and fucking racism. There are a lot of great ones over at Miami based Pins Bro (cafecito!), but this one is just awesome.
----

Magware Magnetic Titanium Chopsticks

Speaking of cool products, how cool are these chopsticks? No more digging through your cutlery drawer for the other chopstick. Sure, these are made for camping, but seriously, that right there is a problem solver. Their take on flatware, and their dedication to the kickstarter platform are both interesting as well.
----

The Radavist Reviews: Quoc Gran Tourer Gravel Shoe

Ok, we like socks, so it should go without saying that we like shoes too. But, it is worth saying that we really like shoes around here. John Watson's review of these shoes is on point, but what struck me right away was just how good looking this shoe is. You now how we used to build whole bikes around one found item, like a rad ringlé hub or something....
----

Climb Your Dreams

Shout out to Aaron for sending this one through! If you've ever found yourself looking out the window longing for some adventure, then let this video go to work on you. Archival audio of Langston Hughes doesn't hurt either.
----

Misty Mornings with Farm League

Nice to get out in the morning last weekend. Misty morning indeed. Prince was of course looking good rocking these orange jams from Giro and pairing them with the Farm League Heavy Hitters socks. On point!
----

Edition 095 - FRIDAY, November 8th, 2019

Ok, yeah, it's been a while. So, what? Everyone needs a little break sometime. What's happened since we last spoke? The NBA season started, that's cool. Cyclocross is really off and running, also cool. What else? What have you been looking at and seeing over the course of the month? Tell me! Also — R.I.P Gert Boyle.

A Bromance Among Superstars

The NBA is back. I said it right there at the top and I mean it. There are three cool articles from the NYTimes that deserve to be in here. Actually four this time around. The first is about Jimmy Butler and his "bromance" with Neymar. Weird? Maybe, but who else do the stars hang out with but other stars?
----

The Rap Board

Remember when sound boards were a thing? No? Ok, well they were for me and we used them often to prank call people. Remember when prank calling people was a thing? Well, the Rap Board has a fantastic collection of rap superstars and their catch phrases. WHAT! Ps. the ladies on here are awesome. Lil Kim, Da Brat!
----

I Was the Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike.

It is great to see people speaking out against the culture that was created by folks in power. Mary Cain tells her story in her own, heartbreaking, words. From the youngest person to ever make the Olympic team, to nothing. Hear her speak out in her own words.
----

All Things Being Equal...

Hank Willis Thomas has his first solo show up at the Portland Art Museum. I've seen it two times since it has been up and each time I find something new that makes me pause and consider not only where I am, but how I got there. If you're in or passing through Portland, make sure you get over to see what it's all about.
----

@DarienBirks on Instagram

Look, we said this one was going to be NBA heavy with the start of the season so close. Darien Birks knocks one out of the park for opening day a couple weeks back. What do you think? This should be a sock, right?
----

Hard Want: Alba Optics - Glow In The Dark

I don't know what it is about "glow in the dark" but it makes me want it even more than I normally would. This is the case with these running glasses from Alba. Hard want, plus they come with a cool running cap and a drawstring bag. What more could you want, really?
----

Electric Socks Return: White Hi-Vis

Speaking of glowing. Our main model, Prince, is back showing off another one of our new socks. This time around it is the Electric Sock, which is back in our White Hi-Vis (pictured here) and Koi (which is a really fancy way of saying Orange) models. Collect all two.
----

CJ's Healthy Habits: Yoga, Wine & Podcasting

Three-J McCollum is back at it this season with a little wine, and podcasting, and can we blame him? The answer is no, as long as he keeps hitting those jumpers when they're needed.
----

GearJunkie: Boycott Backcountry

In the strangest move since "stump" became a word that could no longer be used, Backcountry started suing small brands using the term. Not sure who this brand is trying to alienate, but it seems like they're doing all the right things to ensure that happens. D-U-M-B.
----

The Point Being... Geoff McFetridge on Instagram

Geoff McFetridge posted this on instagram earlier today in response to people using his art without his permission, or at the very least, bastardizing it in some way. It's a great response to the folks that do that and worth looking and thinking over. Sew the right seeds and some cool plants will grow...
----

Edition 094 - FRIDAY, September 27th, 2019

We're edging closer to that 100 mark here for Fun Times Friday. What should we do? An epic giveaway? A collaboration with a hot new streetwear brand? Just try to celebrate making it to Friday? Yeah that sounds pretty cool. What's on the docket this week? Let's find out.

PDX Trophy Cup 2019

Our favorite weeknight race series is back in action, but for one more week only. Get out there and get your race on. Or if you're not in the vicinity, check out these photos that Christopher from Broken & Coastal sent through. Also, how sick is Lucas' Skyway Speedvagen setup??
----

DrakeCereal Blazers Delight

Have you noticed that we are @Drakecereal fans around here? Really? It was that obvious? Well, she's got a new show happening next Thursday, October 3rd at Laundry and you can bet your ass that we'll be there.
----

Franchise Magazine - Issue 06

"He's heating up!" The NBA season is about to kick off in a few weeks. It's safe to say that we're excited. Seeing the Greek Freak on the cover (does it not feel weird to call him that?) of the new issue of Franchise is enough to get us even more pumped. Plus, look how stoked his family is to be on there with him.
----

A Crawdad Campout with the Skid Lizards

Local bicycling bastards the Skid Lizards recently took their blindingly white Teva Sandals on a Crawdad Campout. To see what it's like to try and catch those 'daddy's in the failing fall light check out the whole features. While you're there, see if you can spot out Camo Socks! Oh wait, it's in the photo above. Also, as far as I can tell they're not bastards at all but quite nice.

Megan Rapinoe Named FIFA Player of the Year

Looking resplendent as ever Megan Rapinoe took to the stage to accept the award for FIFA's Best Women's Player of 2019. Cool as ever she took the stage and used it to focus on some of the ugly issues of the day. To paraphrase she said that if everyone — not just the ones affected by the blatant racism and homophobia — got as worked up about these issues they would go away. And she's not wrong folks. Thanks Megan!
----

Goodmoves.tv - Can't Beat Me

Good Moves is the "creme de la creme" of motion design. Every day they put up and highlight a new motion piece. This one, from today September 27 works well with the above Rapinoe piece, and it's fucking awesome. If you're looking at this after Friday check out Can't Beat Me from Mowe Studio, and check back in on Goodmoves daily.
----

Hup Hup Hup Flags

Not really sure what this is, but these flags that were made to pay tribute to the UCI Cycling Road World Championships that is currently underway are pretty fantastic. Taylor Phinney and Death Spray Customs (Born to Bonk!) and Sir Paul Smith in one spot, please sir may I have another?
----

Flagrant Foul: Benching Teen Mom's Before Title IX

Not only is the illustration by J.O. Applegate awesome, but so is this Longreads article. Did you know that up until 1993 there was six-on-six women's basketball being played? How nuts is that. Plus, don't even think about trying to play as a married mom, that just sounds crazy. As with all things on Longreads, this one is... well, long, but it's great.
----

Camo Socks - Cilantro

How many times do I have to say that these are my favorite socks of the summer before I get it through your thick skulls. Oh wait, that seems a little extreme. I just really like these socks and think you will too. Check them out » HERE!
----

Edition 093 - FRIDAY, September 20th, 2019

Your favorite sometimes-weekly report is back to deliver the goods. And when I say goods, there have been some good reads, thoughts, and designs floating around on the internets in the past couple of weeks. Here's a few favorites that filtered their way through. Plus, if you're just here for the Big Buck Hunter link for how they're raising money for Wildlife Conservation — it's HERE

Farm League Socks with Prince

From our list of weekly edits we got some killer shots of Prince in his Farm League socks (and those dope J's). Shout out to Brandy Anderson who's been shooting the product and lifestyle side of our socks for a little while now. Sure, one might say it's easy with hot models and cool socks, but getting the shots day in and day out takes a skill and she's got it!
----

WIN THIS SANTA CRUZ MEGATOWER
Ten for Trails - Trans Cascadia

Trans Cascadia is about to kick off their annual blind enduro race. Not ready for this year's edition? Don't worry, you're not the only one. Bid until October, 31st to win this amazing complete bike. Then, you can at least cross that one off your list of excuses for next year.
----

Sock Stories with Lentine Alexis

This has been a fun one to see come to life. Sock Stories is a tiny Instagram Stories feature that we've been posting on a weekly basis. This one features Boulder, Colorado, chef, maker, hustler, creator Lentine Alexis taking us through a couple days in her shoes, er, socks. (Featured socks - Munich '72
----

Bike Mag: Burned Lines

Super cool to see our Burned Lines trip coming to life. Robin Sansom from Off Site Studios conjured up (and then wrote this piece) this trip that Brian Vernor shot to stunning effect. Barry Wicks and I provided moral support and did our best to maintain high spirits in the face of some truly unbelievable landscapes.
----

ACG Presents: An Impractical Guide to the Outdoors

I swear to you I could have used a couple of these last weekend when camping in the forests of Oregon. Or maybe I was inside the making of one and I didn't even know it? In any case we had a camp host come to our site and inform us that not only was music strictly forbidden, but that after 10pm, so was laughing. Needless to say — laughing ensued. These ACG hit the nail on the head by ascribing to the maxim that the outdoors doesn't have to always be so serious.
----

NFL veteran Vontae Davis quit the NFL Midgame. Here's what happened next.

In continuing the tradition of speaking about mental health in the sporting arena, this is article is pretty nuts. The description of Vontae Davis coming to terms with him impending retirement mid-game is thrilling to read. "Most athletes realize they're ready for retirement in private. Davis felt it happen on the sidelines during a game."
----

Board Woman Gets Paid

You need to know the name Jonquel Jones. She was the leading scorer tonight, this very night, as she led her Connecticut Suns to a 2 game lead over the LA Sparks in the WNBA Semifinals series. We've been posting a lot of Players Tribune articles these days (well, two really) but we'll stop when they become boring. Read it to hear about her connection with Sacramento Kings Buddy Hield, and then check out his Bahamas Relief Page. There's so much to dive into her. Just go go go and check it all out.

Boy Bullied for Homemade Shirt...Gets His Design Turned into Official Merch

File this under "truly heartwarming." This young dude's dream came true after being bullied for his homemade fan shirt. Come on people, you can't make this stuff up. Shout out to the Vols for actually making the shirt. This kid has a life in the design world ahead of him. Do you think he wants to design a shirt for us?
----

Edition 092 - FRIDAY, August 23rd, 2019

What happened to this week? To THE weeks? It feels like we're at that time of the year (cyclocross?) when everything seems to be flying by. The failing light the first sign that cx is coming. Anyway, here's a couple things that we've come across over the last few days. Also, who's coming out to ride with Bill Walton this weekend??

Taos Bakes Socks!

We launched our Taos Bakes socks this week. Check out these little cuties right here. Unconvinced? Go buy a box of their bars (eat them all) and then get back to us, we'll wait. Seriously, they're so so moist and good. I know people don't like that word "moist" but it really is the best way to describe them.
----

Portland Trophy Cup Kickoff Party!

Ok, it's here. The Portland Trophy Cup - America's Fastest, Funnest Weekday Cyclocross Series is set to kick it off this Saturday afternoon at Breadwinner Cycles! See you there. Also, one note: if you're a Junior, there's no reason to not try out the cyclocross racing it's FREE at this series. No joke. Big Shout out to Casey Robertson Designs for pulling together the art for the series this year!
----

Ride with Bill Walton

Legendary Trailblazer Bill Walton is going to be riding bikes with friends (ie: us) this Sunday and there's a more-than-likely chance that you'll be able to find us in the crowd with him. Yes! I'm going to try and get him to autograph my copy of Bill Walton's Total Book of Cycling. It's true I do have one.
----

DNP - Mental Health by Liz Cambage

We're unabashed Liz Cambage fans over here — it's her game, her attitude, and her ability to be honest all the time. The WNBA star opens up on the Players Tribune about her struggles with depression and maintaining her mental health. It's interesting because she's even referencing the troubles she had weeks prior at the WNBA All-Star game.
----

GQ - Stadium Goods - Tracking a Sneaker

Gentlemen's Quarterly does a deep-dive into Stadium Goods and the part they play in the sneaker re-sale industry as well as their goal of trying to "clean up the aftermarket and present it with a premium luxury aesthetic." Take a sniff.
----

PDW - Gear for All Kinds - Video

Spotted Eric Brunt in this lush looking video (shot by Slumworm!) from Portland Design Works. Their tagline Gear for All Kinds is well represented in the video, but I'm just as excited to see Brunt and his adopted pal Van ripping through the tall grass.
----

Allied Cycles Able Gravel Bike

Ever since we posted the new carbon bikes a couple weeks back we have been on a New Bike Hunt around here (ok, maybe it's just me) and I keep coming back to these Allied Cycles ABLE bikes. I love this grey! And it doesn't hurt that they're posting rad rides from trails right behind my parents house! Funable for sure. That's a word, right? Right. They do also have a nice little piece on whether or not you can race your gravel bike in a cross race » here

Leave it on the Road: Shinrin Yoku Brevet

The LIOTR crew went to Japan earlier this year to continue their cycling based travel to raise funds to put towards the fight against cancer. This one looked like a good trip especially because Shinrin Yoku = Forest Bathing. How much yōkan did you guys eat is what I want to know?
----

Oregon Dr.'s are Writing Prescriptions for People to Spend Time Outdoors

Speaking of Forest Bathing...when I was recovering from knee surgery last year my doctor wrote a prescription to a gym. My benefits helped cover the costs for getting back in shape. This makes total sense — ask for it! This is even better, getting prescriptions to take a walk in the woods. You might not be able to get one to travel to Japan and ride bikes for a week with your friends, but you could try!

Doggo of the Week - @carlasbigday

Not only is this a radical looking adventure dog - hi Carla! - but if you look closely you might notice a stylish pair of PDX Airport Carpet socks there in the foreground. Oh you noticed that already, ok, got it. How good are those Rex's Speks! Now let's go ride!

Edition 091 - FRIDAY, August 9nd, 2019

Munich '72

We launched a couple of new socks this week. However, you're seeing the Munich '72 Sock for the very first time right here, right now. We teamed up with our pal Max from Central Office who is never at a lack for awesome sock designs (he made the original LAX one back in the day). Check them and their design inspiration out HERE.

So I Made This Deal with God.

Villanova basketball's all-time leading scorer Shelly Pennefather went to Japan to play pro hoops before the WNBA even existed. When she returned to the states she entered her new life as a cloistered nun. Great article from ESPN Senior Writer Elizabeth Merrill.

Digital Celebrities

Superplastic, from the mind of Paul Budnitz, has a growing roster of "celebrities" that you can hire to "show up" at your events. Quotations are necessary there because they're just digital celebrities with Instagram followings. Sign me up? Pretty into this Hench character by Pete Fowler.

Columbia Sportswear in the Sneaker Game

The illusive ACG Shark was out there swimming through the murky waters of Beaverton, Oregon when behold, a young pup up and jumped straight up and over his finned back. Nah, I'm just kidding, the SH/FT outdoor focused sneakers from Columbia look like a fresh update to their footwear offerings.

Best Friends For Now

An Outside Magazine found its way into my travel bag this summer — the Jul/Aug issue if you must know — and this article is a super interesting take on why Outdoor Friendships Don't Last. Deep bonds that are (seemingly) formed over the course of an excruciating bike ride or harrowing hike peter out without the help of that outdoor element. As someone who has experienced quite a few of these, this article provided some humorous insight into why and how this happens.

Basketball or Nothing.

The new documentary series from Netflix titled 'Basketball or Nothing' centers itself around the Chinle Wildcats - the basketball team from the Navajo Nation in Arizona. I haven't seen the show yet, but it's going on the list for this weekend and came highly recommended by local podcast producer Eddie!

Golden Saddle T-Shirt

It is still t-shirt weather. But, I mean, when isn't it? Shout out to our pals at Golden Saddle Cyclery for sending through one of their radical new pocket tee's! They finally decided to make use of the Geoff McFetridge illustrations just lying around their shop. Plus, this one is nice and thick and feels like it is going wear in well.

Edition 090 - FRIDAY, August 2nd, 2019

"He's Heating Up!" Remember when we did that NBA Jam tournament? That was a good time. The temps have been getting a little warm here, but that just means it's time to put on the short-shorts and go ride bikes. And then drink cool beverages at the end of the ride. That's just how summer goes. Thankfully, we've always got the right tool for the job — The Athletic White Transmission A Camp Mug — I've been using this every day! Also, we got a few new socks in this week that we'll be launching as the August weeks roll along, but head over and check them out here » Shop All Socks!

Palm Dream Socks - Mineral Blue

Julie got so frustrated trying to match socks to her favorite blue Bontrager shoes that she just went out and made them. Introducing the Palm Dream socks. It's really how it goes sometimes. Plus, they make me think of those old steel Lemond bikes that were in baby blue and orange. Or was it a Bontrager?

Video: What have I done to my bike?

Someone sent this through a little while back. I think because of the Athletic logo shirt that pops up in there, but it's cool to see G!ro Cycles UK in the video because they're a dealer and because we've always wanted to visit.

The World's Fastest Family - The Dibaba Sisters

Volt Women are a continual source of inspiration with their feed. This one is no exception — showing the amazing Dibaba sisters running through their native Ethiopia. It is worth a watch even just for the listing off of their accomplishments over a ripping soundtrack of these awesome runners together.

M.C. Escher come to life!

X+ Living Completes MC Escher-like bookstore in China. A teenage me is wanting to head over there right now and just sit and stare at everything. Hell, an adult me is absolutely fascinated by how they pulled this together. The mirrors on the ceiling really tie the room together.
---

The Long and Surprising History of Roller-Derby

We saw the practice squad getting ready to party last night as we were finishing our ride. Roller Derby is such a fun thing to watch and Portland's scene is thriving. Glad to see this historical piece on it pop up in the NYTimes sports section and the photos are almost unbelievable (unless of course you've been to a modern roller-derby then, they're totally believable).
---

Field Notes x Wilco

I'll see if I can dig out my photo of me hanging with Jeff Tweedy at Summerfest in 1997, but until then you'll have to get one of these new notebook sets. A couple of legends coming together to make art! Jeff paired up with Aaron Draplin is like a dream! Doesn't get much better than a handsome notebook with blank pages.

Portland Pickles Baseball (and other fun stories)

I’ve watched this video so many times I might have a problem. A laughing problem. Tears are coming out of my eyes. Is that normal? The Portland Pickles baseball team are taking PDX by storm this summer. Sure, they've been around for a while, but it feels like this is their year, It’s the in thing to do folks. And if this video illustrates any part of it, it’s my favorite part - fun. Ps - can someone check on that last guy, he doesn't seem well.
---

White Transmission A Camp Mug

We didn't get any d-o-g's this week, so I'll have to leave you with a little cheers for the weekend. Seriously, these things are so good, and when the temps are on the rise, it's not something that you want for your drink, whatever it is.

Edition 089 - FRIDAY, July 19th, 2019

Vive le Tour! Who's following along with this years race? It's been a fun one with not too many crashes (fingers crossed for everyone out there). It's funny to watch the race in real time, or at least not at 7am. Anyone notice that they pushed the start times? It's so that they end closer to 5 or 6pm instead of earlier so people can watch at the end of the work day here. It is also funny to watch with French people to get their take on the riders that I know nothing about (you would think there would be some Alaphilippe fans here...alas... not the case).

---

Coffee Socks!

We launched our new Coffee Socks the other day and they've been one of our more popular socks to date! Don't sleep on these because they are cozy and awesome and will compliment your second (or third) trip to the café this week. Promise.
---

Patagonia Films: Life of Pie

Pizza and Bikes can fix anything! It's an amazing tagline and this new film from Patagonia delivers. I've never been to the Hot Tomato (or Fruita in general) but this looks like the place to be. Plus, them playing old ladies and shredding is positively awesome. Sign me up for a large queso to go!
---

Queen Anne Greenways on Twitter

I'm not really sure what Queen Anne Greenways is, but this little twitter exploration of the basketball hoops IN Portland streets is amazing. Make sure to follow the thread all the way through until the Portlanders start chiming in. Also, I need one of these in my street asap!
---

Sphere Paris - Basketball

No idea how or where I came across this, but it looks nice. How does it play? No idea, but it does come with its own display stand and soft carry bag, so that's something right there. Plus, it's on sale, so you can't go wrong.
---

The Bill Walton Mysteries: Friend of the Devil

Summer Reading alert! I can't wait to get back and try this one out. Bill Walton should be a detective if he isn't one. This book by Portland native James Kirkland - Friend of the Devil - confirms it. Just for those of you following along I just finished the second book of the Red Sparrow series - Palace of Treason - so you know I'm in. My only question is this — did BW sign off on this? The WW article makes no mention of this.
---

Hard to Swallow

A brief history o the "protein bar." This one is actually pretty interesting. Especially to note how far back Clif takes their infighting. Also, I really really love the photography in it from Kelia Ann MacCluskey. Serious question: has anyone tried the Nonfood Algae bar?
---

New Kicks / Sweet Kicks x Giro

I was stoked that I remembered a pair of the New Kicks / Sweet Kicks to pair with these Sweeeeet shiny new Giro kicks. They work well together. Just don't tell anyone that I washed them with a couple blue t-shirts directly after. Doh! Such is the life. Also, if you look really closely you can see that I'm testing out the Sportful bibs - review to follow, but so far - thumbs (and butts) way up.

Cervelo Áspero Gravel Bike

The world had their eyes tuned to a certain electric bike built to break the bank earlier this week, which allowed this little beauty to slip quietly under the radar. I'm loving the gold one and the Scottish video that they put out had Julie laughing, so that's something for sure. Can't wait to see one of these in person and I have to add that I'm stoked to see a Gravel bike that doesn't look like you're riding a freaking couch.
---

Swift Industries x Coal Headwear Headlands Collection

Awesome little collection from Swift Industries and Coal Headwear. Make sure you also head over (pun intended) and check out the video that they used to launch the collection. Great little take with our pal and the illustrator of the collection — Chris McNally! Side note: I have one of these Seeker Travel Kits and their handy AF.
---

Doggo of the Week: Hawaii

Ok, excuse me for being a dog owner here for a moment, but bear with me. We've had some fantastic pet friends either show up, or come with our vacation and I have to say, it's been fantastic and made it a little easier to be away from our furry friend. Introducing Hawaii! Who knew that there were long haired Weimaraners??

Edition 088 - FRIDAY, July 5th - SUNDAY 7th, 2019

Travel time set us back a couple of days for the Fun Times, but fear not, they are here. A little riding and vacation does a body good. The excitement for the Women's World Cup final is palpable, to say the least. However, the French people we've spoken with like to add an asterisk to everything (but that's mainly because the call went against them and they lost). Whatever, we're there and that's what matters.
---

Camo Socks - Cilantro - HERE!

I can't tell you what it is really, but I'm super into these socks. Could be the color setup, maybe it's the new shoes or the matching with the Merida Gravel bike, but anyway you slice it these are my current summer pick.

Marvel's Blockbuster Machine
(Harvard Business Review)

This article breaks down the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From hiring directors with outside interests (think Waititi for Thor Ragnarock) and an emphasis on challenging the formula, this article does a good job of explaining their pathway to the top. There are even interesting comparisons to the EUFA Champions League and the band Broken Social Scene, just to keep things interesting.

Merida Reacto Disc 7000E - TEST RUN

My first time on a superbike like this. The Reacto Disc does not disappoint. Plus, my father in law found the one YELLOW bottle cage in the house with the words "Tour de France" so, I've got that going for me. Doesn't look like we can get more than a 25 or 28mm tire on here, but don't let that dissuade you. We're ready to rip!
---

'Run' - NewYorkSunshine

The short film 'Run' by NewYorkSunshine is a strange homage to blue-collar work environments and, well, maybe art films everywhere. It's maybe a little NSFW, but it is interesting with the use of Midnight at the Oasis light airy tunes near the end.
---

One to Watch - Diamond DeShields - WNBA

Not only does Diamond DeShields play in the WNBA for the Chicago Sky, but she wears dope Oakley's when she's doing it. Plus, she's the daughter of Montreal Expos great Delano DeShields! How cool is that? How cool is the WNBA? Very, is the answer.
---

SHUKYU Magazine - Female Issue

The Female Issue of Shukyu Magazine drops at just the right time. This Japanese soccer magazine focuses on some of the amazing USA Women that are currently playing in the World Cup. LFG! Plus, their new shirts are amazing!
---

Malls Across America - Michael Galinsky

There is no denying that Michael Galinsky's 2011 book Malls Across America is a hit. The $500 price tag for used ones on Amazon tells us that much. But, that doesn't mean that you cannot enjoy his amazing photos online right now. I want this book!

Almost Impossible
Why Shooting 95% From The Free Throw Line...

Steve Nash plays co-host on this one. It came across my desk a couple of weeks back (thanks CD!) and it is fantastic. So, read up and then my frequent shouting at the TV will make more sense — "They're FREE, Take them!"
---

Major Taylor Mural!

Jonathan Pucci's newest mural is up in Denver along the Cherry Creek bike path. "I pray that they will carry on, in spite of that dreadful monster prejudice." I love the colors and style that Pucci brings to his murals. This one is amazing and so is the one in Danny Trejo's taco shop in LA.

Edition 087 - FRIDAY JUNE 28th, 2019 -

Well, this is new. Feels good too, seriously. Let's try something new. New socks coming down the pipeline, of course, but that's not all. Ren Quarterly killing it with their new issue, skincare is all the rage, Dope Totes, and a few humorous bits to help you roll straight into the weekend.

House Industries Ampersand Socks - HERE!

Pairing up socks and kicks is one of the more fun things that we do around here. Turns out we're pretty good at it as well. I mean look at these React Element 87's. Also, if you're into it there's also a House Industries Ampersand Sock Pack!
---

West Skincare

Brian Vernor shot all the photos of this new skincare line. It seems like skincare is the new socks these days. And I mean that it in a good way, as in a rising tide floats all boats kind of way. Plus, the smells, the smells, and the packaging is beautiful on this one.
---

Nike x Stranger Things

"When you're up against evil, the rules are meant to be broken." The first round of these look like they sold out quickly. I think it means that anticipation is high for the return of Stranger Things next week. Which, in a way, it should be.

Let's Fix All the Bird Logos in Pro Sports

This had me cracking up, and beyond just a "put a bird on it" way. Even though this is Portland. What the hell sports designers, why is it so tough to give an eagle a yellow beak, or a cardinal a red one? Interesting to think of some of these designs in this way.
---

Robocoprah Winfrey

Found via This is Range newsletter the tagline for this book is "Robocoprah Winfrey and other two-faced people you can never unsee." The rest of it from the Paper Cut website is in Swedish but Yoko Bono and Spockahontas have me interested.
---

Ren Quarterly - Volume 03

The new Ren Quarterly is out. After a brief hiatus, these cats are back with a fantastic little book. Gone are the days of flimsy newsprint. This is a full on production, and let me tell you, it was worth the wait. The Philadelphia themed issue has amazing photos from this season, an article about Dawn Stanley, cool illustrations, and a weird Kobe projection piece. GET IT!
---

COOL COOL COOL

It's hard to say that skate inspired label Bianca Chandon didn't take the COOL COOL COOL from Team Wooly Mammoth. But, that's mainly because we can be sure that they don't know what TWM is or stands for. However, I can tell you this, it stands for cool and this shirt is COOL.
---

Totes Dope! Dope Totes!

If you're looking to replace that LL Bean beach bag that you've been carrying around for 60 years, this is probably the one to do it with. Tracksmith teamed up with Alice Saunders from Forestbound to create these instant classics. And if you really need to replace the LL, she's got some DOPE looking Originals
---

Doggo of the Week: Penny (and Laura!)

Do not go look at Laura's instagram if you're hungry. It's got too much good stuff on there. If you're into thinking and working towards better sleep, diet, CBD and dog stuff, do go check it out here » @elledub. The Good Repair. Makes sense to me! Keep the doggos coming!
