The Sock Drawer hath lay dormant for quite some time now. But, as is the case with these things, it needed to come back. I have said it before and I will say it again - there are so many good socks out there right now. Not just in the cycling world either. However, for this one we will stay squarely rooted in that realm. We have all the coasts represented in this small but colorful collection. The East Coast brightens our day with some reflectivity, the West Coast (that's us) commits treason on a few brightly colored fronts, and the Rocky Mountain Coast checks in with a visual mindgame for your feet.
1. ICNY Sport - Red Original Dot Half Calf Reflective Sock - $34
The iPhone sort of worked on the reflectivity angle.
Everyone that is interested in cycling should have figured out how to do the reflective thing right? Wrong. Sure, we have the piping within the cuffs of the pants. That was neat. Then, there was the reflective logos applied to the inside. Got it. But, what about socks? Well, here they are!
These are fantastic and if you take a look through everything else that ICNY (get it? eye - see - NY? Nevermind) has to offer you will see (there it is) that they have not only taken reflectivity to another level, but they're taking it very seriously. BONUS POINTS: for their Manual For Speed team up.
2. Strawfoot - Neapolitan Wool Socks - $18
These socks are the bees knees. If bees had knees, it would be these, socks that covered them. I received a package in the mail a little while back that said something to the effect of "I'm sure you're swimming in socks, but thought you might like these.." and lo and behold, neapolitan socks melted right out of the package.
Our good friend Kyle Von was wearing them at interbike and it reminded me to get home and shoot them so that I could tear off his awesome packaging (damn you Garrett!) and put them on my feet. That time is now. Also, there are a couple more good reasons to dig around on his site. One - some, if not a lot of the photography is done by Brian Vernor - so when you see a small child running alongside the beach in some Wes Anderson-esque fashion, you can guess that it was shot by him. Two - his bags and other wares (Strawfoot - not Vernor) are freaking amazing looking. Vernor had one of his dopp kits when we were in Japan and the daily wear and tear made that thing look so good.
3. Rapha - Merino Stripe Socks - $25
It should come as no surprise that I am a fan of these socks. Over the past five years I have worn loads of them, and as it turns out, I still have most of them. Merino is amazingly durable and while a few of them have a bit of sag to them these days - the majority of them are still in full rotation.
The new City Range launched on Friday and the spicing up of the traditional "stripe sock" is a welcome one. Hell, I'll even go for the mustard color. Julie has been wearing around the Breton sweater and I'm not going to lie, it is growing on me. Plus, they keep getting taller with each iteration. The only thing that gets me - is that all the design - those beautiful Charlie Brown stripes? They're hidden away in your shoes! there is absolutely no design above the ankle. Egads people! We want other people to know that we're into crazy socks!
Always for the subtle differences. In any case, they're tall and warm and totally awesome.
4) Team Dream Bicycling Team - CMYK Lemondster - $15 (Coming Soon)
Honesty is always the best policy. My dad taught me that. So, I'm going to go ahead and be honest with you. I do not know how I came to own these. Hopefully Sean sent them to me with other stuff that I ordered from them - but I remember seeing the Lemondster sock right around the 4th of July when they were launching some of their other goods and being stoked on them right away. But, that happens a lot with these guys.
If I'm reading this correctly, and I hope I am, this is actually an update to a sock that DeFeet already makes. Mondrian + Greg LeMond = Lemondster, that makes sense, right? You all know that Mr. LeMond is a part owner in DeFeet right? His incredible salesmanship on the bike apparently helped DeFeet garner more than a few teams back during his racing days. Some, such as QuickStep remain that way to this day. Hence, things like the Cavendish Signature Sock.
Word on the street is that more of the Team Dream Bicycling Team Socks are on their way, so stay tuned to tune up your sock game.
5. Mad Alchemy - Team Issue Socks - $12
Pete from Mad Alchemy emailed me as soon as we released photos of our La Galaxie socks. "We didn't copy you, I promise, we've been working on these for a while." Now, you may or may not know this, but Pete and I have been in cahoots for a while now, ever since that first day I decided to light out on my own with crazy ideas of magazines dancing in my head. So, I'm sure my response was something like this - "well, great minds think alike." However, in truth I didn't actually see this as a copy - I saw it as another pair of socks that I wanted to own!
6. The Athletic - La Galaxie Purple - $15
I asked Julie what we could say about the Purple socks here. She replied back with two things. The first - "every body needs purples in their life" seems to work pretty well with these socks. I have a pair of Purple Jordan's that I've been waiting for the right occasion to bust out. Not sure actually what I'm waiting for, but that we are just telling the "true" here.
The second thing she said actually made more sense and it was - "Purple Rain!"
We have a few colors of these socks now, you could almost say an entire "Collection" and a few are out of stock, but they're coming back - in fact - you could say "they're here to stay." Since we're doing the whole "" thing. But, I just got some red shoes the other day - so now I'm thinking maybe we need another color?
That's all for this edition of the Sock Drawer. I'll keep my eyes peeled for some new socks and you, well, you just keep on keeping on.
