Holy schwistos batman! Everyone has cool socks these days. And when I say everyone, I mean, a few people in California, Texas and one guy in West Chester, Ohio. Wherever that may be. I think the prevailing theme with this bunch would have to go into the stripes department. Not the Bill Murray movie either. To think that just a few short years ago anyone that was genuinely interested in using wool socks for their sporting adventures were left to seek them out in foreign lands or buy the big itchy grey ski ones and just hope for the best. I learned early on from my father to both love and hate those sagging monstrosities as we trampled through snow covered winters.
Alas, those days are gone and as well those socks. They have been replaced with various (and sundry) thin and delicious feeling sock choices. In fact you can determine what level of thickness you wish to protect your digits with. It's amazing! With Volume 2 of The Sock Drawer we have a few that have recently made their way onto our feet.
A. Rapha City Riding Socks - $25
These were the Summer City Riding Sock colors, but the new ones are even better. I love categories. They help you to shop, they help you to determine what socks you need for which style of riding you happen to be doing. However, I also like breaking those conventions. The bright stripe at the top of this sock matched so well with some other pieces of riding gear that these became a staple in not just the City Riding department, but also the Riding department. Mix and match, that's what I always say.
B. Prolly x Team Dream Wool Socks - $15 (SOLD OUT)
Bummer on these guys. They are totally sold out. But, that is a good thing, I think. WTF Kits did a great job of reviewing these earlier this week. And a better job shooting as well - how can you compete with a white christmas tree? Prolly teaming up with these guys is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread - sliced bread with purple lines all over it. Hold your breath to see if you can get some of these for Christmas. Please. I want to see your face turn the color of the socks.
NOTE: It should also be noted that these have become the go-to running sock (well, not these specifically, but wool ones like this). So much so, that I'm even thinking of trying them on the basketball court later this week. They do such a good job of letting your feet breath and move around (no blisters) that I'm kind of in love.
C. Strawfoot Handmade - Wool Socks - $16
Totally digging the chevrons on the top of the foot with this one. The color of the wool is "henna" and it works great with the light blue and red. Doesn't get much better than this. Well, it does actually because the entirety of the Strawfoot collection looks fantastic as well. I've got my eye on a dopp kit, waxed cotton...mmm...waxed cotton. How have I not been aware of this company before?
While in LA a couple weeks ago we stopped by to visit our friend Jen at her shop - Panty Raid. She had a nice little leather piece - I think it was for signing your credit card slip or something like that - that said "Strawfoot" on it. She explained that it was from this rad guy in Santa Cruz that's friends with Vernor and likes to surf and make cool products. And even though I might have made up the surf part, he does make cool products. Check them out.
D. Reverse Cycology - Two Stroke Sock - $15
Another case of the woolies. This one is made by Sock Guy and is available at the Reverse Cycology site. The moto crew and the cycling crew can both get behind this one. Get it? Nevermind. Brraaap Braaaap. I guess the other thread that runs through most of these is the wool one. Get it? Nevermind. Finally people are getting on to the fact that wool smells less than the others, right?
E. Team Dream Bicycling Team Sock - $12 (SOLD OUT)
You cannot sit on these sock orders people. They will be gone before you know it. Especially when it comes to those creative types in LA. My friend Tim here was just complaining that every time he hears about a new color of the Golden Saddle Cap or bottle or a Team Dream Team vest he flips on his computer and attempts to buy them — and they're gone! So, what's the solution? I think a continually updating ticker of both of their sites running in your Google Glass glasses (hi Walton!) should do the trick.
So, what's on your feet? These are just a few of our recent favorites. We have a couple things in the pipeline. Hopefully in the next couple weeks. Let me leave you with a little video from our local television affiliates - Travelers Soon to be Greeted by New Carpet at PDX Airport.
