Coming June 14th! In a couple weeks time Clint Culpepper's Sprint Omnium is back on the books. It is amazing how these things sneak up. The race format is a little different this time around considering that this is an OBRA Championship event. Not sure what that means other than the fact that the payouts are in medals (and socks!). Should be a good time.
Clint, if you didn't know, has been putting on these races for some time now - and the Tuesday night PIR race as well - so he knows a thing or two about pulling off a great day at the track. In the past there have been kegs of root beer, that's how crazy these things tend to get. So, if you're thinking that this would be a good time to dip your toe into the track racing waters, you may be correct.
The nice thing about the Alpenrose Velodrome — besides the fact that it is a functioning velodrome mere miles from downtown Portland — is that it makes spectating easy. There are nice comfy metal benches for you to lounge on while racers are busting their eyeballs out trying to best Steven Beardsley in the sprint to to the line. And if you hang around enough, there is a good chance that you might have to hold someone for one of the races (you're going be grabbing the rails of the saddle or possibly the seatpost in case you were wondering).
So, grab your friends and leave your flask behind as Alpenrose has a no drinking policy, and come out and race or watch your friends. Good times will be had by all. Make sure you say hello to the staff as well (see below) they work hard at pulling these things off.
Watch out for this crew.
