Snacks and sport go hand in hand. Eventually all the miles, sprints and slam dunks wear us down leaving us hungry, and possibly a bit cranky. That is called getting hit by a snacks attack. We don’t want powders, goops, bricks or blobs that give us “performance” or “stamina”; we just want the good snacks. For this we plan to explore the snack universe, the snackiverse if you will, and see which snacks best accompany sport.
Snacks Attack – Moon Pie (Banana Flavor)
The banana Moon Pie is a personal favorite for a ride snack. How could you resist a multi-level graham cracker and marshmallow sandwich that’s been dipped in banana flavored chocolate? You can’t, you shouldn’t. Originally created for Kentucky coal miners as a tasty filling snack, the Moon Pie does just fine a fine as a sport snack. Think of shooting free throws as the equivalent to swinging a pick-axe a couple hundred feet below the earths surface. These crinkly wrapped morsels of awesomeness are a bit rarer than the traditional chocolate but are well worth the hunt. You might have to visit about five or six of your favorite convenience stores to get your paws on one.
Visual Cues – Looking at a banana Moon Pie is like looking at the sun. Except you can't look away. The hyper banana color that the treat is dipped into is absolutely stunning. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you will get your daily value of vitamin D from basking in its radiance. You might also be tempted to call them the maillot jeune of snack because of their color, GC leader of snacks would be an accurate description. If you are sick of riding in grey skies the banana Moon Pie could be your own personal bit of summer.
Taste – Surprisingly subtle flavors. Because of the bright exterior you might expect something much stronger in flavor. Stomachs probably enjoy the more neutral flavors because they don’t seem to get upset when fed Moon Pie after a hard effort. The overall flavor of the treat is cookie and marshmallow with a mild sweetness and a hint of banana. One of us is allergic to banana so tasting the delicious faux banana flavoring is something special. At least faux bananas are always guaranteed to be ripe.
Nutrition – Surprisingly, not that bad. Moon Pies aren’t chock full of really good stuff but they actually aren’t chock full of really bad stuff either. If you’re fine with a bit of corn syrup and artificial coloring then Moon Pies definitely deserve a spot in your snack rotation. With less sugar and equal fat and salt as some of those hippy sport guy bars, the Moon Pie does a good job of being a tasty replacement. Heck, sometimes its worth breaking the nutrition “rules” and eating snacks for taste rather than sustenance
When – Eat Moon Pies when you need something solid in your gut. Maybe its the marshmallow expanding but these snacks seem to fill you up when you need it the most. Grumbling stomaches are silenced when they feel a full Moon Pie. Side Note: Pay special attention to the note on the side of the packaging "microwave for an out-of-this-world desert." Do that. See what happens.
