We've got new socks launching tomorrow, that much is a fact. The rest of the details sometimes get a bit fuzzy around the edges. But, there are some things that we know. We know that there was a desire to make these socks a little differently, maybe a bit less "tech" than we're used to, possibly with a bit more cotton than most. A sock that could look and feel like your gym socks from back in the day. Because we know everyone is just hankering to harken back to gym class right? Maybe?
In any case, the Legends Collection is something that we've been working on for a little while. Garrett Chow came up for the MashSF photo show back in October and while he was in town he started on designs for a mural in our shop. The wall features a few athletes that have made a mark on their respective sport. There's a Wilt & a Steffi & a Steve & a Roger. You can see the finished product up there on the left. The mural itself made an instant impact on the demeanor of the shop, it is a brilliant eye catching piece that nearly everyone who walks through the door comments on in one way or another. "Wilt!" a basketball fan announced just the other day while we were talking over his sock options.
Well, we can hardly resist the temptation to "make socks for that" around here and so, before the paint had fully dried we were deep into discussions as to what kind of socks could be produced around this collection. The first step towards that (pun intended) was to give each of the athlete's featured a specific colored sock. And I'm sure you can see where we got these color ideas. From the green forests of Oregon track and field to the yellow and gold of the Lakers and on to those iconic Brooklyn-esque blue and red stripes. It's all in there. At that point, all it needed was a name — and the Legends Collection was born.
There are also some T-shirts and a sweatshirt that have come to fruition as well. We figured that the drawings were just too awesome to hide in your shoes. And we worked (and worked and worked) with our local printer to insure that they placed everything in just the right spots. Sure, I know what you're thinking "a sweatshirt for the summer?" But, remember, we live in Oregon and a cozy sweatshirt cannot be discounted at any time.
Pre = Green and with a little running short slit built in.
Roger De Vlaeminck = Brooklyn Chewing Gum inspo!
Wilt the Stilt = (he didn't like that nickname, don't call him that) double purple & yellow.
Steffi Graf = red & white stripes. Side out!
Now, just because we made them a little less tech (please, don't put them in the dryer folks) that doesn't mean that you cannot use them in "traditional" (read: mountain bike) setting. They're still just socks after all. So, we took them with us when we did a little Team Wooly Mammoth Mountain Extravaganza out in Bend, Oregon last month. We were hoping for days and days of sunshine and beautiful berms — mainly because most of us have no idea what these "berms" are that people rave on and on about — and that was sort of the case, minus the sunshine. What we did have were some radical sock samples to test out in the forests surrounding Bend. The one thing that you can't see here? A little bit of Garrett's illustration on the top of the foot. And maybe they're a tiny bit taller, you can't see that either. But it exists, we assure you.
If you want to sign up for our newsletter, you will get early access to this exclusive collection. Ok, it's not that exclusive, but it is pretty awesome and we do have fun with it.
