As the last vestiges of summer have officially left us here in the Pacific Northwest, it is important to reflect on the warmer, sunnier times before they fully escape into the ether. Not long ago, a few weeks, less than a month for sure, and we were all jaunting around the West Hills surrounding Portland in short sleeve jerseys with our knees out in the open for the the sun to beat down upon. Aaaand now we're back to a rainy reality.
Our friends Kelly and Mal were in town from Seattle to race some cross and see the sights of Portland — coffee, trees, more coffee, more trees — so we showed them one of the laziest rides we could possibly muster. The sun definitely was shining and layers were shed with a quickness that only the most competent cyclists can do. It is almost as though we knew the inevitable approach of the rainy season were upon us, because our nursing of delicious Heart Coffee , and blinking up at the sun were melded into one long runway to our bikes. That and Julie and Kelly had turned up in matching Tenspeed Hero Sous les Pavé jerseys and the heat was on in terms of Julie's design process:
Q: "Where did you get the idea to make this jersey?"
A: "I'm French, of course I like stripes. And Tenspeed Hero colors with stripes? Makes sense." Then take a look at the above photo to confirm her thoughts on the matter.
And that was pretty much it. Then, they proceeded to attack up every hill and lead us through a few hot laps of the notorious Fairmont Loops. Scary stuff up there. Golden MG lined roads with walkers, dogs and baby strollers at every turn.
We then stopped by and said hello to our friend Joe - who filled our bellies with cold cokes and our heads with visions of the milky way played out on hard to find footwear. We perused his bike collection, sang some songs and learned about Red Yarn (Kelly's beard may have had something to do with it) causing Mal to proclaim something to the effect of "you guys really took the 'let's take it easy today' to heart."
Whatever the case may be, we did see a lot of this red, white and blue color-way in our own mise-en-scene which sort of implied that Kelly and Julie had in fact chosen the right jersey for the day.
