We've been hanging around Steven Nereo for some time now. Our mutual friend Cole introduced us one night long ago and we became fast friends over too many beers and a smattering of records. A great start to any relationship we can assure you. I mean, look how far it's gotten us. We had been following along with Steven ever since. First there was the dating advice website which turned into a Huffington Post Column. Then the show in SF that turned into a city riding shoot that spawned it's own Survey section on their site. Then, a little while back we started noticing these amazing wave photographs popping up on Steven's - @Apehangers - instagram account and wanted to get in on that action. We just didn't know how big that action would be.
Weighing in at roughly 5 ft x 4ft these photographs have completely changed the look and feel of our beloved ESA Gallery. The quick, action packed feel that associated our No Timeouts basketball exhibition has been completely transformed into a place of peace and serenity. Not even joking.
Don't believe us? See for yourself.
The namesake piece — Steven's VW Eurovan — had to spend a couple extra days in Ashland and couldn't make the trip. But, it was there in spirit (and is back on the road now) and will be forever immortalized in Steven's introduction to the Eurofornia show catalog. A concise little showcase of not only the wave photography, but also Steven's illustration work. Mad props to Central Office Co for design and layout on the book. Pick up your copy here.
Then, of course Sam Smith came through once again with a brief glimpse into the opening night of Eurofornia. And while we are continually enamored with Sam's filmmaking skills, the moving picture does not do these images justice (that's not a critique of Sam or his new camera). They must be experienced in person to understand their full magnitude.
Come and visit us at the Athletic and then step next door into the ESA Gallery to see Eurofornia, Steven Nereo's aquatic and photographic exploration.
