Last weekend the prestigious Cross Crusade kicked off with their annual festival of fury at Alpenrose Dairy. It is hard to say what actually happens at these things, mainly because of the sheer number of people that attend each year. This year being no different than any other "each year" in that 1600 participants showed up to try their hand at Tony Kic's well designed race course. It was a bruiser (the course) and smelled a bit like cow poo (it is an operating dairy after all) and the fans that came out were more than happy to cheer and jeer their way around the field.
The surprise from the day came from the race within the race. Breadwinner Cycles have already started making a name for themselves by unleashing the full fury of Matt Hall and Ira Ryan onto the Men's A category. Matt and I connected early on during the race and it was a bond fused in the passionate heat of racing. That might sound a little weird, but damn if it isn't true. It was a back and forth game that came down to how many other competitors we could put in between us. It was still neck and neck into the last lap when lapped traffic got the best of us. Curses! He may have gotten me in the end, but I shall have my revenge.
We joked post race about our standings. How, considering the efforts that we had both just put out, our placing must award our heroics justly. It was a right and just conversation that ended with the two of us convincing each other that we, of course, must have ended the day with a top 25 position. Turns out we were wrong in that department, but never mind. We did it all again the next weekend.
Julie's race went a bit the same, excepting for the fact that she was at the front end of the race, not mid-to-near the back. Her funny moment came from being stuffed into a corner by a Master's Catagory racer that wasn't into being passed by a girl. She said the best tactic in this situation is to just wait until he inevitably stuffs himself into a corner. Which this one did. The only problem is that then whomever is in front then gets away. So, there's that. She finished a much more respectable 4th, with definite plans to close i it down on the front end in the coming weeks.
Things to try at a cross race this year:
- Remember to bring everything. Spare wheels were forgotten this time, next I'm afraid it will be something important, like my shoes.
- Try more porchetta sandwiches.
- Capture Carl Decker making a funny face. Add to collection of Adam Craig and Carl Decker making funny faces photo album. Completed.
- Watch more single-speed races, alternate between cheering and jeering. Consider participating in one of them.
- Beat the Breadwinner folks whenever possible.
